Less pack weight in the backcountry always equals greater comfort. Plus, there’s something especially gratifying about winnowing your pack down to just the barebones necessities.
Needless to say, we’re big fans of gear that lets us do more with less. Sleep kits (sleeping bags, tents, mattress pads) are almost always the heaviest, most cumbersome gear in any hiker’s pack. So, it makes sense that leaving your tent at home is one way to cut big weight from your pack. But, unless you enjoy crashing on leaves and pine needles, you still want a decent place to sleep.
Which is where Kammok’s Roo comes in. In the company’s own words, it’s:
… a high-performance camping hammock designed to provide you with an exceptional outdoor experience. Redesigned for superior comfort and an easy repacking experience, the 2017 Roo is tear resistant, incredibly comfortable, and built to last a lifetime.
The first thing to take notice of with the Roo is its size … or lack of it. It weighs just 24 ounces and packs down into a coconut-sized stuff sack. Once setup, it stretches to 10 feet long with a 5’7″ wingspan — large enough to fit two people to lounge or one to sleep comfortably. The diamond ripstop nylon construction is lightweight yet ensures that it can support up to 500 pounds.
These are all great features. But, the big win for hikers, campers, and even survivalists is the add-ons that work with the Roo.
The Kuhli Weather Shelter is an ultra-lightweight, purpose-built tarp that works in tandem with the Roo to keep the weather out of your “tree bed”. Its 16 reinforced guy out points mean it can be setup in a variety of configurations depending upon your needs.
Go one step further with the Dragonfly Insect Net to essentially turn your Roo into a “floating” tent with 360-degree insect protection.
Lastly, Kammok’s Python Straps are designed to easily setup the Roo anywhere you need it. The ultra-durable straps offer daisy-chained suspension materials and a combined length of 20 feet meaning they can be installed almost anywhere you find trees. Reflective tracers are woven into the length of the straps also provide increased visibility to setting up in low-light conditions.
Pricing and Availability
The Roo is available in six colors for around $99 USD from Kammok. Add $29 for the Python straps.
